My Story

I began my yoga journey in high school when my mom dragged me to a class, swearing it would help in the upcoming Lacrosse season. I wasn’t into it—at all. The room was dim, the poses felt weird, and mostly…it just hurt. So I didn’t go back.

A couple years later, while studying at UCLA, I stumbled into an evening yoga class that shifted everything. The soft lighting, the breath work, the grounding in my body—it pulled me out of my head in a way I didn’t know I needed. I walked back across campus calmer, clearer, and finally able to sleep on my back without pain.

Yoga returned in a much deeper way when my older brother Judd was diagnosed with leukemia. During his treatment, we found a free class for cancer patients and caregivers. Supporting him in that room while also getting quiet in my own breath changed the trajectory of both of our lives, with Judd eventually becoming a yoga teacher as well. In fact, it was while practicing in one of my brother's classes that I met the love of my life—my wife Shazzy.
That season led to a dedicated practice, and eventually to completing my yoga teacher training while finishing my History degree at the University of Utah.

Today, I teach with the Mosaic Yoga collective in Salt Lake City and lead immersive international yoga retreats. I also teach at the Gateway Academy—a therapeutic boarding school—where I co-run Jam Academy, a School-of-Rock–style music and mentorship program with my brother Skip It’s some of the most meaningful work I get to do.

When I’m not teaching, I’m writing, recording, and performing with my band James Hardy & The Fire. Music and yoga fuel my life and give me the chance to help people connect—to their bodies, their breath, their voices, and their creative power.

I’d love to share the practice with you, whether it’s on a mat, at a retreat, or at a show.

Love,
James
